The Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS-Mathematics), embraces by the Hausdorff Center of Mathematics, a cluster of Excellence established within the German government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a PhD program in mathematics based upon the well-known teaching and research tradition of the Department of Mathematics and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics.

All the documents required must be sent to us by post and must reach our office before the deadline. Please send the application package only if it is complete; we will not be able to process incomplete applications.

There are currently about 100 PhD students in the program, which offers a wide range of lecture courses, graduate seminars, research seminars, and winter/summer schools. The language of instruction is English. 30 doctoral grants (Hausdorff scholarships) of 1100 euros per month for a maximum of 3 years can be awarded, beginning April or October each year. The grants are supplemented by a family allowance, if applicable. In addition, there are 8 qualifying grants of 800 euros per month for qualifying year.

Required documents:
• Application form
Please, fill out the application form and sign it. Here are some explanations:
1. Indicate your funding situation.
Are you applying for one of the Hausdorff PhD grants or one of the qualifying grants?
When evaluating your application BIGS will screen the local funding possibilities. Are you interested in other funding possibilities and have you contacted faculty members or one of our department institutes?

University dormitories are almost entirely reserved for undergraduate students. PhD students are only accepted under special circumstances. However, BIGS will assist you in finding private quarters.
3. Check if you meet the visa requirements.
Students from most countries outside the European Union will have to apply for a visa to study in Germany. The details must be obtained from the German Embassy or a German Consulate in your home country. Please, do this before you send the application.
